Will Maoist hold general convention?

Dahal weighs opportunity, challenge

KATHMANDU, July 29: The ruling UCPN (Maoist) that has lately seen much upheaval has once again announced a date in February for its general convention to elect a new party leadership, the third such announcement in 22 years.

However, a diversity of views exists concerning this development. For some the announcement was a tactical response to a similar announcement made by the breakaway CPN-Maoist to hold its general convention a month earlier, rather than a sincere move towards a truly democratic party.

But for others, Dahal is keen on the convention since it will not only be taking place with the most favorable timing and political environment for him but also the gathering will provide him a golden opportunity to fend off accusations of holding the topmost position in the party for 22 years without the mandate of a general convention.

साउन ३ गते बुधबार। बिहान १० बजे साथी केपी ढुंगाना प्रधानमन्त्री निवास, बालुवाटार गएका थिए। यही हप्ता रिलिज हुने आफ्नो पुस्तक ओपन सेक्रेटको विमोचन गरिदिन निमन्त्रणा दिन। पुस्तकप्रेमी विद्वान प्रधानमन्त्रीका रुपमा चिनिएका बाबुराम भट्टराईले ‘हुन्छ, म आउँछु’ भने। ‘साहित्यप्रति एकदमै रुचि राख्ने मान्छे हुँ। सत्य घटनामा आधारित पुस्तक रहेछ, पढ्छु पनि, कार्यक्रममा आउँछु पनि’ भनेपछि ढुंगाना दङ्ग ! जाँदाजाँदै प्रधानमन्त्रीले फेरि भने, ‘समय मैले बिर्सन सक्छु है, विश्वदीपलाई टिपाएर जानु होला। उनले पुस्तक पनि छाडेर गएका थिए।त्यही दिन राति प्रधानमन्त्रीका सहयोगीले फोन गरेर यसो पो भने- ‘प्रधानमन्त्री अहिलेसम्म किताब र पत्रपत्रिका विमोचन कार्यक्रममा जानुभा छैन, त्यसैले उहाँ आउन नसक्ने हुनुभो।’

I got chance to read his article after long and long...
I could not complete his article and also interview of Himal Sharma. The interview was taken by his sister Pramila.
I know, Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai will read both articles. Its reason is that he always inquisitive to read related him.But I don't know, why, I'm not sure he will remember these articles at the moment of signing Raju Basnet's promotion.
Why? His performances are enough to guess.
Anyway, the article and interview both returned those days which I forced to forget. But never.

Under fire, Dahal to move out of Lazimpat residence

KATHMANDU, July 22: Amid strong criticism from party cadres for his extravagant lifestyle, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has decided to vacate his Lazimpat residence and return expensive vehicles given him by the government.

Addressing the closing session of the five-day plenum, Dahal said he would vacate the Lazimpat residence immediately after making a new arrangement. He said he would only use vehicles provided by the government.

"I have been staying on rent. But I have been accused of buying the house,” he said, adding, “I am a former prime minister and government will provide me a house and a vehicle," party central committee member Krishna Bhujel quoted Dahal as saying.

The government has already brought an ordinance to provide state facilities to former prime ministers.

Leaders clash at Maoist plenum

KATHMANDU, July 21: War of words between cadres close to UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai turned nasty on Friday when both the sides insisted on presenting the report of the Bhojpura State Committee first in the ongoing plenum of the party.

Ashok Jaisawal from the Dahal faction and Baliram Sah from the Bhattarai faction exchanged blows over who should present the report first. The two sides had separately held discussions on Dahal´s document.

Both the sides have accused each other of planning the attack. "Bhattarai faction´s cadres hurled chairs targeting the chairman. This amply proves their ill-intent," said a cadre from the Dahal faction, adding, "Had not the YCL cadres intervened, Dahal would have been seriously injured."

Ex-commanders demand probe against Dahal

KATHMANDU, July 20: In a sign of deepening troubles in the ruling UCPN (Maoist), six of the seven former PLA division commanders have resigned en masse from their party posts, alleging that Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal was hatching a conspiracy to make a few division commanders scapegoats for huge financial irregularities carried out by PLA commanders close to himself.

The PLA ex-commanders also demanded a thorough investigation against former PLA supreme commander and Maoist Chairman Dahal and deputy commanders Barshaman Pun, Nanda Kishor Pun, Janardan Sharma and Chandra Prakash Khanal over embezzlements running into billions of rupees.

Sources close to the rapidly unfolding developments told Republica that the erstwhile commanders who walked out of their positions accused party headquarters of compelling some division commanders to embezzle party resources by frequently demanding millions from them.

Ex-PLA men obstruct (UCPN) Maoist plenum

KATHMANDU, July 19: The ongoing UCPN (Maoist) plenum has been postponed for Thursday after former PLA and YCL cadres demanded that the financial transaction carried out by the PLA commanders be made public.

Submitting an 11-point demand to party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the closed session of the plenum, they also demanded immediate suspension of commanders involved in irregularities for investigation saying they would obstruct the plenum if party failed to take action against them.

Former party Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya faction had also made the same demand.

Dahal postponed the meeting for Wednesday assuring party cadres that their demands would be addressed. He said the demands uphold the spirit of party purification that would help solve problems that have lately surfaced in the party.

Dahal, Shrestha groups rap own govt

KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, July 15: Leaders close to UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha have criticized their own government, saying it could not work in accordance with the party spirit and has rendered the party weak on the issue of nationality. Speaking at the ongoing Central Committee meeting at party headquarters, Perisdanda, they also asked party Vice-chairman and Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai why he signed the BIPPA agreement with India and went for the extradition treaty ordinance. They likewise brought up the question of entrusting security at Tribhuwan International Airport to foreigners. "The government could not move in accordance with the party´s spirit. The government´s decisions have weakened our nationality. What is the fact about the security of Tribhuwan International Airport being entrusted to foreigners?" a CC member quoted Agni Sapkota, who is close to Dahal, as saying at the meeting. Sapkota also alleged that the government could not even carry out ordinary development work. Another leader, Hit Bahadur Tamang, who is also close to Dahal, criticized the government for weakening Nepali nationality.

Dahal challenged over political document

KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, July 14: Challenging the political document presented by UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, two senior party leaders have registered their dissent in the ongoing first Central Committee (CC) meeting held after the formal split of the party. While politburo member Ram Karki has already registered a nine-page written dissent, another politburo member Shashi Sherchan aka Sonam Saathi is preparing to register a supplementary proposal on Sunday. They have claimed that Dahal´s document is silent on the issue of nationality, unequal treaties with India and border issues, among others.

Prakash Dahal: divorced, married and now eloped with ‘lots of money’

Two months ago, when Nepal Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai sanctioned Rs 20 million for a nine-member expedition to Mt Everest, it sparked outrage over what many saw as splurging of public money on a team that included Prakash Dahal, son of Maoist leader Prachanda.
Prakash later announced he did not need the money, ending that controversy, only to enter another. Prakash, married with a child, has now apparently eloped with one of his expedition team-mates, Bina Thapa Magar, a Maoist student activist. This was after they had scaled the peak.
Prakash, 31, and Bina are said to be “in hiding” in Patna, a city where he had gone to school from 1996 to 2002.

Why Maoist clash began from Chitwan?

KATHMANDU, July 3: Various questions have arisen following Saturday´s violent clash between the cadres from UCPN (Maoist) and its breakaway party CPN-Maoist in Chitwan.

Many have wondered why all this began from the home district of UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and new party´s General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa, among other senior Maoist leaders. Questions abound: Whether they fought over property or the leaders´ prestige issue triggered the clash or is there any other reason.

The UCPN (Maoist) party owns its party offices and other properties in at least 50 of the total 75 districts. No clash has been reported in other districts so far.

No end in sight to Maoists' fight over party property

KATHMANDU, July 2: The row between the UCPN (Maoist) and its breakaway CPN -Maoist over properties owned by the party is likely to deepen if the parties fail to amicably settle the issue of sharing the properties worth millions of rupees.

While the UCPN (Maoist) has staked claim to all the properties and refused to share them with the breakaway party, CPN-Maoist has maintained it has equal rights to the properties.

As of Sunday, the parties have found no solution to the issue.
