UCPN (Maoist) struggles to resume CC

POST B BASNET/KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, June 28: As factionalism and disputes over the tactical line deepen the internal crisis in the party, Chairman of the UCPN (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal struggles to maintain his hold on the party and call a meeting of the Standing Committee, prior to resuming the Central Committee (CC) meeting that was postponed on Monday for three days. According to sources, the Maoist chairman held rounds of meetings with Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya who leads the party´s hard-line faction, and Dr Baburam Bhattarai who leads the moderates, but to no avail. At one of the meetings of the party top leaders, another Vice-chairman Narayankaji Shrestha proposed Bhattarai as the party´s candidate for prime minister and Baidya had seconded the proposal. But in another meeting with Baidya, Dahal had tried to convince him that the party should rather forward the name of General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa as the prime ministerial candidate, terming Bhattarai as "rightist". "The chairman wants to break the tactical alliance between Baidya and Bhattarai that has been formed lately to cut him to size. Perhaps he plans to become prime minister himself finally after creating rifts among the senior leaders," said a senior leader close to Baidya.

Baidya, Bhattarai gang up against Dahal

KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, June 27: The two factions led by vice-chairmen Mohan Baidya and Dr Baburam Bhattarai in the UCPN (Maoist) are secretly teaming up against party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal with a plan to remove the latter as the parliamentary party (PP) leader. Insiders from Baidya and Bhattarai factions said that the two camps are working on a plan to replace Dahal with Bhattarai as the PP leader so as to end Dahal´s monopoly in the party. They also added that the two factions are also planning to remove Deputy PP leader Narayankaji Shrestha from the post. “The proposal is under serious discussion but is yet to be finalized,” Maoist politburo member Devendra Paudel, who is close to Bhattarai told Republica. “We want to give the party a new lease of life by reallocating responsibilities among the top leaders.” He said they are for reshuffling the responsibilities on the basis of one-person-one-post principle. Party Chairman Dahal holds the position of parliamentary party leader as well as the chief of the party´s military wing. After the party unified with the CPN (Unity Center -Masal), Dahal had nominated Narayankaji Shrestha as the deputy PP leader to replace Bhattarai.

Dahal camp castigates Baidya, Bhattarai

	KIRAN PUN from republica KATHMANDU, June 26: Just a day after the UCPN (Maoist) held a meeting of the party Central Committee (CC) to resolve internal disputes, the establishment faction organized a gathering of artists and writers in Kathmandu Saturday and castigated Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya and Dr Baburam Bhattarai, who lead rival factions in the party. "The alliance of the Baidya and Bhattarai factions is unpolitical and will be fatal for both," a participant quoted party leader Haribol Gajurel as saying at the gathering held at a banquet venue. According to him, Baidya had accused Bhattarai of being a revisionist and advocates protracted people´s war; so the alliance between the two is unnatural. On Friday, 156 Maoist lawmakers had submitted a memorandum to the party CC demanding that Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal implement the party´s decision to send 33 percent women into the government. Gajurel, who is close to Dahal, stated that the party failed to move ahead successfully during the last three years because of Baidya and Bhattarai.

No chance of national consensus govt: Dahal

KIRAN PUN/POST B BASNET from republica KATHMANDU, June 25: Maoist Chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal has stated that there is no possibility of forming a national consensus government as the Nepali Congress (NC) is against joining such a government and is instead conspiring to dissolve the Constituent Assembly (CA). “The NC is in favor of direct rule by the president, who is from that party, after dissolving the CA and imposing a state of emergency,” a CC member quoted Dahal as saying during his briefing to the party Central Committee (CC) on Friday. Under such circumstances, Dahal argued, the party should lead the government with the backing of the UML as per the seven-point deal reached with Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal. Dahal was of the view that Khanal would pass the baton to the Maoists after completing his six-month tenure in July-August, and that would give his party an upper hand even if the CA is dissolved.

POST B BASNET /KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, June 24: With the UCPN (Maoist) preparing to endorse the line of peace and constitution, the party hardliners have been left with very few cards to counter the party establishment, which they say is deviating from the ideals of revolution. Backed by Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai, party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal commands a comfortable majority in the CC to endorse the line, parrying stiff opposition put up by the hardliners. But, that was not the power equation in the party till three years back. The campaign for unification with fringe leftist parties in the recent years turned the table against the hardliners led by Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya. "The new political developments have proven that the chairman wanted to secure a majority so that he can deviate from the ideology and prevent the party from achieving the goals of revolution," says Hari Bhakta Kandel from the Baidya camp. Baidya has strong support from the core Maoists who devoted their lives for the party´s cause. Most of those injured during the insurgency and the kin of the deceased support Baidya. As the party stands at a very critical phase in history, the hardliners find themselves in an uncomfortable minority, and many of them are recalling those days when their faction was the largest in almost all party committees. Of the 95-member core Maoist CC, which was active during the insurgency, Baidya has the support of 43, Dahal 34 and Bhattarai 12. Among the six members Rabindra Shreshtha, Mani Thapa, and Matrika Yadav quit the party; Kali Bahadur Kham and Ram Prasad Banjade have been suspended; and Gauri Shankar Khadka died a few months ago.

Dahal proposes general convention

POST B BASNET/KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, June 22: The hardline faction of the UCPN (Maoist) has opposed the proposal to hold a general convention to end factional disputes over the party´s political line and defuse an ongoing internal crisis. According to sources, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal proposal the general convention during a meeting of the party´s top five leaders held at his residence at Naya Bazaar on Monday. Vice-chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai seconded the proposal, but Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, who leads the hardline camp, contended that the time was not appropriate for a general convention as the party finds itself at a very critical point in the peace process.

MAOIST DISPUTE Dahal faction to hold unionists gathering today

KIRAN PUN from Republica KATHMANDU, Jun 20: In a clear indication of widening rift between the rival factions within the party, the UCPN (Maoist) establishment is holding a national gathering of workers loyal to the faction in the capital on Monday. Party insiders say some 1,200 members representing 32 unions of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF) from across the country will participate in the gathering to chalk out their future strategy.

Can UCPN (Maoist) regenerate?

DHRUBA ADHIKARI With the fall of the communist regime in Russia and the “counterrevolution” in China, many Western intellectuals naively adduced that the world would no longer see the rise of any radical communist movements in the world. When the Nepali Maoists formally announced an armed insurgency to subvert the state structure in the spring of 1996, the bourgeois intellectuals quickly dubbed the move an anachronism. But history proved them wrong. The Protracted People’s War, launched with a few homemade weapons, spread by leaps and bounds across the hills and plains of Nepal and shook the unitary state and feudalism to their roots, posing a serious threat of instability to the whole subcontinent. Subsequently, the People’s War in Nepal resuscitated a new life into the moribund world communist movement and became a beacon of hope for the revolutionaries the world over.

This is an intimate drama brimming with sadness, suspense and surprises as the search for a missing mother in Seoul gives us glimpses into the heart of a family.

The novel is presented in the voices of the writer daughter, the businessman son, the housewife daughter, the abject father and the missing mom.

On a visit to the big city from their home in the countryside, the mom is separated from her husband at the bustling Seoul station and vanishes. The family mounts a search, distributing leaflets, offering a reward and scouring neighborhoods where there are reported sightings.

Amid this crisis we learn a great deal about changing norms, eroding family ties and fading rural rhythms in contemporary Korea. Family connections, and disconnections, are vividly portrayed through shared memories of a mother who meant more to everyone than anyone realized or expressed while she was around. She was the archetypal mom, always there for her children, but underappreciated and poorly understood.

The different glimpses into family and the absent matriarch are moving and shed light on a society in rapid transition and how people are navigating the crosscurrents.

The mother raised the family in a rural area with a shiftless and faithless husband, an arranged marriage that produced children, but little love or understanding. Here mom is endlessly working, haggling and scraping to makes ends meet and feed her children. Knowing she cannot rely on her husband, she undertakes various ventures to earn extra cash, but she is never far from the hearth.

The girl, meanwhile, is living at the supervisor's house in Meerut's Devlok Colony.

Maoist factions bracing for showdown

POST B BASNET/KIRAN PUN KATHMANDU, June 15: The rival factions in the UCPN (Maoist) have begun separate intra-party campaigns for a showdown at the crucial Central Committee (CC) meeting beginning June 22 as internal disputes over the party´s tactical line and tussles for power reach a boiling point. The meeting is being considered historic by party rank and file as it is expected to forge the future course for a party that is at a critical phase in the peace process. The party hard-line faction led by Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya has put up a stiff resistance to the party´s move to integrate and rehabilitate combatants as per the inter-party five-point deal, while the party establishment plans to endorse the move by a majority vote in the CC.

PLA-men refuse non-combatant role

KATHMANDU, June 9: Commanders of the Maoist People´s Liberation Army (PLA) have demanded that their party reject the Nepal Army (NA)´s integration modality that has proposed turning them into a non-combative force.
The PLA commanders put forward such views during an interaction with party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal at the latter´s residence in Nayabazaar on Wednesday.

A Gurkha soldier who single-handedly defeated more than 30 Taliban fighters has been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross by the Queen.
Corporal Dipprasad Pun, 31, described how he was spurred on by the belief that he was going to die and so had nothing to lose in taking on the attackers who overran his checkpoint in Afghanistan.
