Varun and Rohn started out with a simple dream. But when it turned true, Alma Mater grew really big, they tell Catherine Rhea Roy
I remember thinking that school was the worst thing to happen to me after my shellfish allergy. The wiser (read older) people said: “Those were the best days of my life.” Actually that was Bryan Adams, but the point being now I am wiser (read older) and those were in fact some of the best days of my life. And I shamelessly cling onto my alma mater in petty my school-your-school arguments, which one had a bigger playground, better uniform, won more trophies.

African Farmers Displaced as Investors Move In

Tyler Hicks/The New York Times
In Beldenadji, Mali, a canal has been extended to irrigate land, part of an American aid initiative.
SOUMOUNI, Mali — The half-dozen strangers who descended on this remote West African village brought its hand-to-mouth farmers alarming news: their humble fields, tilled from one generation to the next, were now controlled by Libya’s leader, Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, and the farmers would all have to leave.
Deals for farmland have involved many African nations.

“I don't want to start medicines for high blood pressure. There is no way I want to take medicines life- long” is the common response of a patient when suggested to start pharmacological help for hypertension. The unenthusiastic response is usually do to the fact the patient suffering with this problem does not always have any disturbing symptom that compels him to take medicines. But the fact is that in spite of any obvious disturbance the disease tends to have its own effects gradually on the human metabolism as it is called as the ‘silent killer.'

Directorate should be given military mandate: Pun

Following the recent decision of the UCPN (Maoist) standing committee to accept Nepal Army-proposed modality of integration, the parties are likely to reach consensus on the modality for integration of the Maoist combatants.
However, the Maoists have not accepted the modality in totality, leaving the nitty-gritties of modality open for discussion with other parties. In this context, Republica´s Kiran Chapagain and Kiran Pun talked to Barsha Man Pun, the chief of the party´s army department, on Sunday. Excerpts:

BINU RIJAL
KATHMANDU, May 23: “Son or daughter?” my elderly neighbor asked me pointing my big belly. I proudly replied “daughter” as I was going to be a mother for the first time.I was eagerly waiting that cherished moment. But hearing my reply, her facial countenance darkened. She narrowed her eyes.
Anger was bellowed inside me but I remained silent. Breaking the silence, she began giving me sympathy, “First daughter is okay. But, next time check and give birth.”

'Party will ultimately follow my line'

Maoist Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya, who leads the hardline camp in the UCPN (Maoist), has registered a note of dissent against the party’s decision to accept Nepal Army’s modality for PLA integration.

Earlier, he had registered his dissent when Chairman Dahal adopted the line of peace and constitution overturning the mandate of the Palungtar plenum.

Baidya has accused Chairman Dahal of deviating from the revolutionary course of the party. Republica’s Kiran Pun caught up with him at the party headquarters Paris Danda after the standing committee meeting of the party held on Saturday. Excerpts:

from Kantipur

Relationship milestones, worrying about the ‘whole future

Carolyn Hax,Columnist.

A disagreement broke out about your position of what the two-year mark in a relationship means. Would you mind clarifying?
Some said you believe that after two years, love dies due to repetition and monotony, and others said that’s nothing like what you said.

from Times of India
A new survey has discovered that the average couple bickers 2,455 times a year - equal to almost seven times a day.

Researchers found that the biggest single reason for a tiff is not listening to what the other half is saying, which is responsible for around 112 cross exchanges a year, followed by money worries, spending issues and laziness around the house, reports the Sun .

Annoyance about over-spending, especially on impulsive or unnecessary purchases, leads to 109 disputes - with money in general being the cause of a further 108.

Detachment is necessary

from Hindu
We must realise that what we enjoy in this life is impermanent, and we must develop a detached attitude towards life, said M.V. Anantapadmanabhachariar.
There were kings who would retire to the forest and do penance, hence earning the title of Rajarishis. There were other kings who might not have retired to the forest, but carried out their duties while continuing to live in their kingdoms. But they were detached with regard to the power and pelf. Such a king was Janaka.
He carried out his duties as a king, but did so in the true spirit of a rishi, with no attachments whatsoever. He followed the path of karma yoga that the Lord was to talk about later in His Krishna avatara.

Sex worker invited to Mamata's swearing-in ceremony

Mamata Banerjee
Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as West Bengal's first woman chief minister on Friday.

KOLKATTA: Seema Folka is excited, nervous and proud that she will be rubbing shoulders with the state's who's who on Friday. The 43-year-old will be attending Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee's swearing-in ceremony.
Folka is a sex worker who will be in the invitee's gallery when Banerjee and her ministers take the oath.
"We are thankful to Didi for showing a humane gesture by including sex workers in her invitee list. This quality in her will keep her connected with people from every section of the society," said Folka.
Driven to the profession by abject poverty, Folka entered the professiion at a young age. Her father used to work as a daily wage earner to feed five mouths till he became bed ridden due to gastric ulcer. Her mother's meager income as domestic help was too insufficient for the family. Most of the time Seema and his two siblings would go without food for days. And when Seema's marriage was arranged, the groom's family broke the engagement as Seema's father could not meet the dowry demand. That was when Seema left her Murshidabad dwelling for Sonagachi, the biggest red light area in Kolkata to salvage the family out of poverty.

Everyone has heard the old saying, the more the merrier. We are taking this saying to heart.
As the summer vacations are here, it's a perfect time to take a nice, long trip with one's family. But many of us are multiplying this fun by bringing their relatives along for the journey. Obviously, when you travel with a group of twenty people, including your cousins, nieces and nephews, it sure makes the trip a memorable one.

Happiness has a dark side

from Hindu
Even happiness can have a dark side, according to the authors of a new review article published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.
They say that happiness shouldn't be thought of as a universally good thing, and outline four ways in which this is the case. Indeed, not all types and degrees of happiness are equally good, and even pursuing happiness can make people feel worse.
But setting a goal of happiness can backfire, says June Gruber of Yale University, who co- wrote the article with Iris Mauss of the University of Denver and Maya Tamir of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. It's one of the many downsides of happiness — people who strive for happiness may end up worse off than when they started.

- रामशरण बजगाईं , from Naya Patrika

Staged fright of the inevitable

CK LAL, from Republica daily news paper
Once acolytes of Krishna Prasad Bhattarai stopped patronizing Laxmi Didi’s teashop at New Baneshwar over a decade ago, Saturday mornings ceased to be politically significant for the residents of the neighborhood. Politics these days is discussed over rounds of harder drinks during Happy Hours in the evening at one of the various restaurants along the main road.

The April Uprising in 2006 reenergized the minor intersection in front of distinctive water tower as it became a favorite site for protest programs. Since the formation of the Constituent Assembly (CA), all kinds of pressure groups use the place to proclaim their position on various issues of national importance. Last Saturday it was the turn of the twitterati (The Urban Dictionary definition: “The Tweet elite, whose feeds attract thousands of followers and whose 140-character spews capture the attention of the rapt who doggedly monitor them”) to declare that they were angry, very, very angry, with their elected representatives.

Will take oath if 33 pc issue addressed: Gharti

KIRAN PUN
Maoist leader Jayapuri Gharti, who has been named Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, boycotted the oath-taking ceremony.

Along with Gharti, two other ministerial nominees also boycotted the ceremony. All of them are from the Maoist party hardline faction led by Senior Vice-chairman Mohan Baidya.
Gharti has argued that she is in politics not our of vested interests, but to fight for the cause of women and the betterment of society.
"So oath-taking is not the major issue; the issue is whether reservations for women are ensured," Gharti said. She is also against the party´s decision to send into government those defeated in the CA elections. "What is the meaning of getting elected by people if losers also get equal political opportunity?" she asks. Excerpts of an interview:

Write where the heart is

SRAVASTI DATTA
Suparna Chatterjee tells Sravasti Datta she loves to write simple stories thatare, at their core, very Bengali
With her doll-like face, large eyes and the red bindi on her forehead, Suparna Chatterjee looks every bit the quintessential Bengali. In fact so strong is her sense of roots — despite having lived in three different continents — that it's one of her strengths as a writer. Her debut novel “The All Bengali Crime Detectives” (Rupa, Rs. 150) provides a word picture of the sights and scenes of Kolkata, Chatterjee's birth place. Chatterjee, though settled in Bangalore, still remembers her childhood days growing up in the City of Joy. “This novel is a release of nostalgia I felt for home.”

Bin Laden Sons Say U.S. Broke International Law

By SCOTT SHANEWASHINGTON — The adult sons of Osama bin Laden have lashed out at President Obama in their first public reaction to their father’s death, accusing the United States of violating its basic legal principles by killing an unarmed man, shooting his family members and disposing of his body in the sea.
The statement, provided to The New York Times on Tuesday, said the family was asking why Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda, “was not arrested and tried in a court of law so that truth is revealed to the people of the world.”

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow…

by Ruth Gordon, LCSW It’s always unsettling, to say the least, when facing an inevitable unwelcome event that will occur at some unknown time in the future. This could be anything from going to the dentist to a serious loss. There hangs the sword of Damocles and we are helpless to make it vanish or to slither out from under it — we are stuck.
We can steel ourselves, go into denial, round up a crew of advisors, or utilize any one of a number of possible reinforcements.

A working day in the Facebook India office isn't just about ideas, codes, designs and tests.
‘Done is better than perfect,' sounds good? How about unleashing the painter in you on a clean bare wall? And then indulging in some more fun in ‘after-hour' activity? Sounds too good to be true? This is only a glimpse of how life is at the Facebook office.
You log in everyday and stay connected for hours here. You update and comment, post albums, events, videos and also become a farmer. All this and more on the social networking site — Facebook. How often have you traced old friends and got traced through this networking site. Then there are those who met on this virtual space and also tied the knot. Ever wondered how all this is possible?

My Reaction to Osama bin Laden's Death

By Noam Chomsky, Reader Supported News
07 May 11

We might ask ourselves how we would be reacting if Iraqi commandos landed at George W. Bush's compound, assassinated him, and dumped his body in the Atlantic.
t's increasingly clear that the operation was a planned assassination, multiply violating elementary norms of international law. There appears to have been no attempt to apprehend the unarmed victim, as presumably could have been done by 80 commandos facing virtually no opposition - except, they claim, from his wife, who lunged towards them. In societies that profess some respect for law, suspects are apprehended and brought to fair trial. I stress "suspects." In April 2002, the head of the FBI, Robert Mueller, informed the press that after the most intensive investigation in history, the FBI could say no more than that it "believed" that the plot was hatched in Afghanistan, though implemented in the UAE and Germany. What they only believed in April 2002, they obviously didn't know 8 months earlier, when Washington dismissed tentative offers by the Taliban (how serious, we do not know, because they were instantly dismissed) to extradite bin Laden if they were presented with evidence - which, as we soon learned, Washington didn't have. Thus Obama was simply lying when he said, in his White House statement, that "we quickly learned that the 9/11 attacks were carried out by al Qaeda."

Fear of flying—II

Prateebha Tuladhar
When I boarded the Cessna nine-seater aircraft from Nepalganj to Juphal, I just knew that I had to write “Fear of flying-II”, if I made it in one piece. The plane was tiny, really tiny. I was already shivering inside just at the sight of the aircraft.
I noticed the pilot, who had just flown the aircraft to Nepalganj from Juphal, sauntering near the plane talking to a tourist, drinking out of a mug that said COFFEE in brown letters all over it. He looked composed. I wondered how he could be so and also what kind of a man would want to fly such a small aircraft, and so many times a day.

Secret Held if Bin Laden Lived Here, Village Says

Warrick Page for The New York Times
News vans have begun showing up in Chak Shah Muhammad, the Pakistani village Osama bin Laden's wife said they made their home for two and a half years.

Bin Laden’s youngest wife, who was detained after the raid that killed her husband, told Pakistani investigators that they lived for more than five years in their last home, in Abbottabad, and before that spent two and a half years in this village of roughly 1,500 people, some 25 miles to the south.

Bin Laden’s Secret Life in a Diminished, Dark World

Reuters
An image from a video seized during the commando raid shows Osama bin Laden at home, watching himself on TV.

The Abbottabad compound became the Bin Laden base in 2005. Interviews paint a portrait of a man, perhaps a little bored, presiding over family life while plotting mayhem.
WASHINGTON — The world’s most wanted terrorist lived his last five years imprisoned behind the barbed wire and high walls of his home in Abbottabad, Pakistan, his days consumed by dark arts and domesticity.
American officials believe that Osama bin Laden spent many hours on the computer, relying on couriers to bring him thumb drives packed with information from the outside world.

EXCLUSIVE: An Interview With Former Guantanamo Detainee David Hicks

by: Jason Leopold, Truthout
David Hicks was one of the first “war on terror” detainees to be sent to Guantanamo the day the prison facility opened on January 11, 2002. He is one of the small group of detainees who challenged President George W. Bush’s November 13, 2001 executive order authorizing indefinite detention, which led to a landmark 2004 Supreme Court case, Rasul v. Bush, in which the High-Court said detainees have the right to habeas corpus. Hicks spent five-and-a-half years at Guantanamo and was tortured. Last October, he published a memoir, “Guantanamo: My Journey.” This is his first interview since his release from Guantanamo in 2007.

The War Is Over. Start Packing!

by: Robert Naiman, Truthout
We got our man. Wave the flag, kiss a nurse (or a sailor) and start packing the equipment. It's time to plan to bring all our boys and girls home from Afghanistan. When the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks rolls around, let the world see that we are on a clear path to bringing home our troops from Afghanistan and handing back sovereignty to the Afghan people.
With more Sherlock Holmes than Rambo and judging from press accounts, not much role for the 100,000 US troops in Afghanistan, US intelligence tracked Osama bin Laden to a safe house in a well-appointed suburb of Pakistan's capital and a small US force raided the compound. Press reports say Osama bin Laden was killed in a firefight in the compound and that his body has been buried at sea, in accordance with Islamic tradition that expects a burial within 24 hours.

Face That Screamed War’s Pain Looks Back, 6 Hard Years Later

Ayman Oghanna for The New York Times
Samar Hassan, with a relative, had never seen the photo of her, below, taken after her parents were killed by U.S. soldiers in Iraq

MOSUL, Iraq — Until the past week, Samar Hassan had never glimpsed the photograph of her that millions had seen, never knew it had become one of the most famous images of the Iraq war.
“My brother was sick, and we were taking him to the hospital and on the way back, this happened,” Samar said. “We just heard bullets.
“My mother and father were killed, just like that.”
The image of Samar, then 5 years old, screaming and splattered in blood after American soldiers opened fire on her family’s car in the northern town of Tal Afar in January 2005, illuminated the horror of civilian casualties and has been one of the few images from this conflict to rise to the pantheon of classic war photography. The picture has gained renewed attention as part of a large body of work by Chris Hondros, the Getty Images photographer recently killed on the front lines in Misurata, Libya.

The daughter of a 9/11 victim reacts to the death of bin Laden

Matt McClain/For The Washington Post - Carie Lemack, who lost her mother, Judy Larocque, when American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, on May 4 in Washington.
from Washingtonpost
Like most Americans, the first time I heard the name Osama bin Laden was on Sept. 11, 2001. Unlike everyone else, when I first heard his name, I had just hung up the phone after being told that my mother, Judy Larocque, had a reservation on American Airlines Flight 11 — which hours earlier had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.
