Back to bourgeoisie schooling
Photo:Hira Bdr Gharti Magar |
When the CPN (Maoist), now split into the UCPN (Maoist) and the CPN-Maoist, fought a decade-long war against the state, they ran their own schools in rural villages of Nepal. Ostensibly, the objective of the Maoist schools was to create what the rebels described as a ‘scientific’ and ‘progressive’ education system. In reality, the Maoist schools were run to develop a new breed of young communists by indoctrinating children. The Maoists believed that it was necessary to sustain their war.

KATHMANDU, August 29: Less than a week after talks between the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) and the CPN-Maoist led 33-party alliance on holding a roundtable political conference failed to make any headway, influential CPN-Maoist leader Netra Bikram Chand suddenly left for China on Thursday.
Though Chand is among a few Maoist leaders who visit China frequently, his visit to the northern neighbor this time has set off speculation in political circles in Kathmandu. The visit has courted comment as Chand´s party has kept the visit secret and nothing has been given out to the public whether this is a political visit or not.

[Looking for Sukh, we fly Bdesh [aboard]. But most of them could not success. Its reason [may be] is Sukh is related to satisfaction. Monday morning I met Umesh Bhattarai, my friend, who lives in Kitchener, Ontario. In Nepal, Umesh was working engineer and his wife was working staff nurse. I asked his day to day jindagani. He replied --Dukh 6. I told, "Nepal is enough for Dukh. Why you left Nepal for same Dukh?" His answer may be to maintain formality what we do asked each others --are you fine. Anyway, it clicked me. Then, I kept here Santoshji's article for you]

UCPN (Maoist) flexibility on criminal past unlikely
KIRAN PUN
KATHMANDU, June 5: UCPN (Maoist), one of the main political parties, is unlikely compromise on its opposition to the proposal barring election candidates with criminal backgrounds.
Rejecting the proposal advanced by the Election Commission after consultations with the political parties, the Maoists argued that this is something that relates to the truth and reconciliation commission and can affect the whole peace process. As no Maoist leader would be safe if the provision is implemented, the possibility of the Maoists compromising on this issue is very slim.

Rai had to flee the country with his wife and children. But his parents did not, as they were living in a village that was unaffected by the conflict in southern Bhutan. “Someday, I hope I’ll be able to see their faces. I pray for it. I dream about it,” says Rai.

Why Maoist parties have jumbo CCs?
KIRAN PUN
KATHMANDU, April 18: The general conventions of the two Maoist parties -- Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led UCPN (Maoist) and Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist -- had concluded with decisions to go for slim central committees (CC), arguing that these would run more smoothly. But in the end, both the Maoist parties have formed jumbo CCs, in clear disregard of the mandates given them by the general conventions.
While the UCPN (Maoist) has decided to form a 399-member CC and it already has 236 members now, the CPN-Maoist is going for a CC of 151 members, of which it already has 144.

Gulf between Baidya-led alliance and big four widens
KIRAN PUN
KATHMANDU, April 5: The gulf between Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist alliance on one hand and the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and the United Democratic Madhesi Front on the other is likely to widen further as the former seeks positive signals on its preconditions and these appear unacceptable to the later. The Dahal and Baidya alliances sticking to their positions not only amplifies the polarization between the two Maoist-led alliances as between pro-election and anti-election, there is also seen the possibility of confrontation.

Why UCPN (Maoist) wants Jha in at top level?
KATHMANDU, March 28: With the
postponement of former CPN-UML leader Ram Chandra Jha´s joining the
UCPN(Maoist) party as scheduled, this has now become a most talked-about
issue within the UCPN (Maoist) over the last couple of days.
Debate rages on over Jha joining in the largest party, so much so that the issue of giving full shape to the party´s central committee is being overshadowed by his proposed entry into the party.[break]
Some Madhes-based leaders in the party are lobbying against allowing the top party leadership to appoint Jha to the party´s top body while other leaders want to give him a key role in the party so that the former rebels could establish a strong foothold in the Madhesi community.

Friday, March 22, 2013

Everyone wants to be on TV
R. Sukumar --In India, everyone wants to own a car and house.
Everyone has an opinion, especially about politics and cricket (which is good).
And everyone wants to be on TV.
Every TV news story, irrespective of whether it is about a terror attack or a cricket match, has people jostling to get into the frame. And it isn’t just the man on the street who wants to be on camera. Politicians, businessmen, even print journalists who are otherwise rarely seen—all love to be on TV.
Most are willing to do what it takes, even if this means coping with a little indignity.

Pundit Manto’s First Letter to Pundit Nehru
This is M. ASADUDDIN‘s translation of a letter written by SA’ADAT HASAN MANTO to Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954. This translation first appeared in The Annual of Urdu Studies (volume 11, 1996).
Pundit-ji, assalamu alaikum!
This is the first letter I’m sending you. By the grace of God you’re considered very handsome by the Americans. Well, my features are not exactly bad either. If I go to America, perhaps I’ll be accorded the same status. But you’re the Prime Minister of India, and I’m the famed story writer of Pakistan. Quite a deep gulf separating us! However, what is common between us is that we are both Kashmiris. You’re a Nehru, I’m a Manto. To be a Kashmiri is to be handsome, and to be handsome … I don’t know.

Kathmandu Valley, where a medieval past is vibrantly present,
architectural marvels are part of everyday life, and the sacred is

My Conversation With Hugo Chavez

That day I interviewed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran, in the morning. In the early afternoon, I interviewed Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, and in the evening I interviewed Muammar Gaddafi, the leader of Libya.
It was a strange kind of day, a hectic day with three world leaders, all of whom were regarded as despots. I was surprised when I met Chavez. He was engaging. When he walked into the room, he was laughing and singing. He spoke English and we talked baseball for a few minutes. For someone who didn't like the American leadership or our country, he certainly followed American baseball and knew everything about it. For about five or ten minutes we chatted, while the crew finished setting up for the interview.
